LAHORE, Aug 12: Tanvir Ashiq and Omer Baber were crowned as Under-14 and Under-12 champions of the All Punjab Independence Day junior tennis tournament by winning their finals at the Bagh-i-Jinnah Monday.
Third seed Tanvir outplayed the fifth ranked Fahad Ali in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. Earlier, Tanvir defeated Omer Babar 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinal while Fahad struggled to beat Patras Masih 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 before qualifying for the final.
Top seed Omer proved too strong for third seed Shahryar Niazi to clinch the U-12 title with a convincing score of 6-0, 6-0. In the Under-18 event, Munir Ashiq cruised into the final defeating Jan Nisar Ahmad 6-1, 6-2. The second prefinal between Komail Hasan and Shahrukh Niazi remained unfinished due to rain. When the play was called off Shahrukh was leading 2-0 in the deciding third set.
The second semifinal of girls Under-14 between Saba Aziz and Asra Amin was also stopped at one set each due to rain. It will be completed Tuesday. Both the unfinished semifinals of boys and girls will be completed Tuesday followed by the finals.
Boys U-14: Semifinals: Tanvir Ashiq bt Omer Babar 6-4, 6-2; Fahad bt Patras Masih 6-0,3-6, 6-3 final: Tanvir Ashiq bt Fahad Ali 6-4, 6-3 U-12 final: Omer Babar bt Shahryar Niazi 6-0, 6-0.
