KARACHI, Aug 12: Two men and a woman committed suicide in the city on Monday.

A nurse committed suicide while on duty at Civil Hospital on late Sunday night.

Police said that Najma Mumtaz, aged 45, was on duty at the ICU Ward when she went to the rest room. When she did not return for long, her colleagues knocked on the door. After there had been no response from inside the rest room for several hours, the door was broken open and the nurse was found lying unconscious in the room. Attempts were made to revive her, but she died.

Her autopsy report had been reserved till the receipt of the histopathological and chemical report, sources at the hospital said.

A young man committed suicide by injecting himself with poison in his house in Sir Syed Town.

Police said that Babul, aged 24, killed himself by injected poison into his body. He had been jobless for the past several months, police said quoting the family sources.

His body was sent to Abbasi Shaheed hospital for post-mortem.

An elderly man stabbed himself to death in his house in Mominabad after he had arguments with his family members.

Police said that Innocent Francis, aged 64, resident of Haryana Colony, Mominabad, repeatedly stabbed himself with a kitchen-knife.

Police said that the dead man was mentally unstable. His wife and four children were present in the house when he stabbed himself with a kitchen- knife.

He was rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

ENCOUNTER: Police shot an alleged bandit to death in Saeedabad on Monday, in what they claimed an encounter.

Police said that four policemen were patrolling on motorcycles in sector D-3 when they noticed three young man carrying a hand bag. When the policemen signalled them to stop, they opened fire at policemen and tried to flee.

Police returned the fire killing one of the suspects on the spot. Another was arrested. The third suspect escaped.

They arrested suspect, Yasin alias Kana, gave the name of the dead suspect as Hammad and of the absconding suspect as Irfan.

Police claimed to have recovered three pistols, one 9 mm pistol, eight magazine, and 60 bullets from their possession.

INJURED: At least 10 workers were injured when a boiler leaked in a dying factory in Korangi Industrial Area on Monday.

Police said that repair work of a jet machine was in progress when the boiler lid got displaced discharging steam and boiling water. As a result, 10 workers present in the proximity suffered burns.

They were admitted to Civil Hospital.

Sources at the hospital described the condition of three of the injured as serious as they were still unconscious. Doctors said that most of the injured suffered 70-90 per cent burns.

The injured have been identified as Khursheed Nawab, Naseem Khan, Riaz, Saeed, Mushtaq, Anis, Khurram, and Mairaj.

Three injured workers, who suffered superficial burns, were discharged from the hospital after treatment.
