KARACHI, Aug 7: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) on Wednesday ruled out the possibility of an electoral alliance with the unified Pakistan Muslim League (PML), whose different factions are expected to unite by Aug 17.
Leaders of both the alliances — Maulana Shah Ahmed Noorani and dissident leader of the PML-QA, Ejazul Haq met here and discussed the possibilities for establishing an electoral alliance, but could not enter into any accord in this regard.
A leader of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Pakistan (JUP-N), divulging the deliberations of the meeting, said that Ejaz called on Maulana Noorani at his residence and expressed the will to establish an alliance with the MMA.
Noorani said that since the MMA itself is an electoral alliance, hence it would not become part of any alliance, but assured Ejaz that they would consider an electoral adjustment with the PML in the upcoming elections.
It is worth mentioning here that Ejaz separated himself from the PML-QA recently, and he may become the chairman of an expected alliance of different PML factions excluding the PML-N.
Meanwhile, an MMA press release said during the hour long meeting, both leaders discussed in detail the present political situation, electoral adjustment, powers to the prime minister in the proposed amendments and restoration of democracy.
Noorani urged the need for holding elections on their scheduled time, and warned that any delay tactics by the government would cause irreparable damage to the country.
He said that the MMA is reviewing all options for electoral adjustment, and would prefer parties having a positive approach on national issues. —PPI
