HYDERABAD, Aug 5: A member of the Hyderabad District Council, Jeeyando Soomro, on Monday injured himself with a piece of glass during the proceedings of the council’s session while protesting against the indifferent attitude of officials of different departments.

The acting convenor, Yousuf Siddiqui, adjourned the session till Aug 8 after a group of members walked out of the session in support of Mr Soomro.

The members also staged a march from the district council hall to local press club.

When the proceedings of the session started, Mr Soomro stood up without seeking permission of the chair and criticized the authorities of Hesco for issuing detection bills to his electorates and the managing director of Wasa for not providing water in the area. He said water was even not available for the funeral of a body.

While speaking, Mr Soomro successively bashed his head against the table. Syed Ali Mohammad Shah, Ibrahim Chishti and others tried to calm him down and when a glass of water was offered to him he broke it with his hand, resulting in injuries to his hand.

Around 14 members, including Syed Ali Mohammad Shah, Farheen Mughal, Firdaus Abro, Fazeelat Basheer, Ibrahim Chishti and Ali Nawaz Kutrio, walked out of the session in protest and marched up to the press club.

They neither consulted other members nor properly asked them to join them in the protest march as a result of which there was poor attendance in the march.

Mr Soomro told newsmen that officials of different departments did not respect Nazims and threatened to commit suicide if due respect was not given to the Nazims.

He said more than one and a half year had passed but not a single work of the Nazims was done because bureaucrats were neglecting them.

He alleged the SDO, Memon sub-division, Mukhtiar Shah, of demanding bribe and condemned him for issuing detection bills.

The district council member deplored that civic bodies’ workers had approached him to get them their salaries of the last three months but he could not do anything for them.

Mr Sooro said he along with other members of his union council would tender their resignation if their problems were not resolved.

He said neither taluka nor district councils had provided any help to him.

After suspending the proceedings for five minutes, the acting convenor adjourned the session sine die due to disorder in the council.

The agitating members returned to the council and criticized other members for not joining the protest.
