KARACHI, Aug 1: Fifteen vehicles — six cars and nine motorcycles — were either hijacked or stolen in the city on Thursday, police said.
Three cars were hijacked. Three others were stolen.
Five motorcycles were hijacked. Four others were stolen.
Police also claimed on Thursday to have recovered two cars and seven motorcycles in the city.
WOUNDED: Two activists of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement were seriously wounded in Orangi Town on late Wednesday night, in what police claimed an encounter.
Police said that a patrolling police party signalled four men to stop in Hanifabad, Orangi Town.
The four suspects escaped into the nearby sector office of the MQM.
When the police party reached near the sector office in pursuit of the suspects, firing started from the party office in which a policeman, identified as Obaidullah, was wounded, police said.
Police returned the fire wounding two MQM activists, identified as Asif, aged 31, and Fahim, aged 25.
However, a spokesman for the MQM told this reporter that during a power breakdown some party workers were sitting outside the sector office in Hanifabad when a police party arrived there and opened fire on them wounding the two activists.
The wounded men were rushed to Civil Hospital where doctors described their condition as serious. The wounded policeman was rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
ROAD ACCIDENT: An elderly man died in a road accident on Super Highway on late Wednesday night.
Police said that Dad Mohammed, aged 74, was run over by a speeding truck (LAS-3711) near New Sabzimandi while walking across the road.
He died on the spot. The body was sent to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for post- mortem.
At least four passengers were injured when a speeding coach rammed into a stationary bus in New Karachi on Thursday morning.
Police said that a bus of route 7-C was parked on the main road near Erum Shopping Centre, as it had developed some fault, when a speeding coach rammed into the bus.
Four passengers of the bus, identified as Rasheed, aged 40, Hina, aged 25, Khalid, aged 20, and Sartaj, aged 22, were injured.
They were rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
Dildar Shah’s legs were crushed when they came under the wheels of a railway engine near Star Gate on early Thursday morning. The man is 25 years of age.
Police said that the victim’s clothes got entangled in the railway tracks when the accident took place.
He was rushed to Jinnah Post-graduate Medical centre where he was admitted.
DIES OF BURNS: A young girl who suffered burns in her house in New Karachi on Wednesday night died in Abbasi Shaheed Hospital in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Police said that the clothes of Tarannum, aged 19, caught fire while cooking in her house in sector 11-D, New Karachi.
She suffered serious burns. Her father rushed her to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where she was admitted.
She suffered 95 per cent burns, hospital sources said.
