FAISALABAD, July 29: Some unidentified persons shot at and injured seriously the district jail head warden and his brother in Warispura here on Sunday night.

Masked persons barged into the house of Fayyaz Ahmed, made the inmates hostage and started beating Fayyaz. When his brother tried to resist they opened fire, injuring critically Fayyaz and his brother Gulzar Ahmed. Later, they escaped in the dark.

The family members told police that some hired men or relatives of prisoners were involved in the attack. Police were also apprehending the involvement of some sectarian group.

Batala Colony police have registered a case against unidentified assailants.

FUJ ELECTIONS: Muhammad Yousaf was elected president of the Faisalabad Union of Journalists in one-to-one contest with Muhammad Riaz Raza while Sabir Sarwar clinched the seat of secretary-general by defeating Ghulam Mustafa Baig.

The elections were held at the local press club here on Monday under the supervision of election commissioner Rasheed Ludhianvi.

According to results, Riaz Malik was elected senior vice-president, Saeed Somi vice-president, Sabir Sarwar secretary-general, Muhammad Mushtaq finance secretary, Jameel Siraj joint secretary.

Sajid Aleem, Irfan Jahangir, Naeem Malik, Khaleelur Rehman, Mian Saeed, Hamid Rafiq, Faiz Afridi, Shabana Sehr, Qari Abdul Khaliq and Zia Shahid were elected executive members.

Earlier, the polling was announced for July 25, but it was postponed after the issuance of restrained order by a local court on the application of an editor and publisher of a local daily.

On July 26, the judge withdrew the restrained order and announced July 28 for the elections when the election commission and some FUJ members contested the case.
