KARACHI: Harkat man remanded

KARACHI, July 25: Justice Shabbir Ahmed of the Sindh High Court, who is also the administrative judge of the anti-terrorism courts at Karachi, remanded on Thursday in judicial custody an accused, Mohammed Ashraf Khan, treasurer of the Harkatul Mujahidin Al Almi, till Saturday.

According to the FIR No. 107/ 2002 lodged at Civil Lines police station, Ashraf was involved in masterminding and providing money for the purchase of arms/ammunition and vehicles used in the attack on the US consulate in Karachi on June 14.

Police claim he also confessed that Mohammed Imran, Mohammed Hanif alias Ayub, the chief and deputy chief, respectively, of the Harkatul Mujahidin Al Almi, are his accomplices and he plotted the conspiracy and provided money for purchase of the vehicle for attack on the motorcade of Gen Pervez Musharraf on Sharea Faisal near Flak Naz Arcade on April 26.

Ashraf was arrested by the Pakistan Rangers, Sindh, following information on July 24 at House No 23/16, 3/D in Nazimabad No. 3. He was handed over to the Karachi police for further investigation and necessary legal action.

On Thursday, investigation officer Daud Akber produced Asharf in the court to obtain remand. The AJ passed two days’ judicial custody remand orders in his chamber and directed police to submit chargesheet on Saturday along with the chargesheets of Mohammed Hanif and Mohammed Imran, the main accused in the US consulate bomb explosion case.— PPI
