KARACHI, July 21: The Sindh Council of the Pakistan People’s Party has rejected the proposed constitutional package of the government.

It termed the package a conspiracy against democratic system, the federation and rights of people. The council also decided to complete intra-party elections on all levels by August 5.

The council, which met at the party secretariat here on Sunday with its president Nisar Ahmad Khuhro in the chair, reiterated its determination not to provide any opportunity to the un-elected government to runaway from holding the October elections.

In one of the resolutions, the PPP expressed its unflinching confidence in the leadership of Benazir Bhutto and reiterated its determination that despite all state-sponsored conspiracies, people of Sindh will take a sigh of relief after restoring democracy in the country with the might of votes.

Referring to “Wara System” in the agriculture sector in Sindh for winter season, the meeting termed it detrimental to the sector.

By another resolution it criticized the government decision to recover taxes which were written off last year owing to drought in Sindh and expressed concern over this “blackmailing” of farmers and settlers.

The council paid tribute to the lawyers’ fraternity and the bar associations in the country for their courageous decision of rejecting the constitutional package.

The council demanded release of all political detainees, including Asif Zardari, Jehangir Badar, Yusuf Raza Gilani, Mushtaq Awan, Agha Tariq. It criticized the campaign launched by the government against the PPP and its leadership and maintained that unconstitutional steps of the government would enhance the popularity of Benazir Bhutto.

Nisar Khuhro said if free, fair and transparent elections were held no supporter of the government would be able to get himself elected to the parliament and this was the reason that Gen Pervez Musharraf and his colleagues were making efforts to block the way of Benazir Bhutto through their unconstitutional and autocratic regulations.

Others who spoke at the session included Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Syed Khurshid Shah, Aftab Shaban Mirani, Prof ND Khan, Rashid Rabbani and Dr Yasmin Shah.

PEOPLE’S YOUTH: Speaking at the general body meeting of People’s Youth, Karachi division, PPP Sindh Information secretary Munawwar Hussain Suhrawardi said the government had started playing a heinous game through its agents to run away from the elections.
