KARACHI, July 17: The city council on the second day of its post-budget session approved a resolution denouncing the interference by provincial education department in the affairs of colleges devolved to the city government and appealed to the Sindh governor to lift ban on recruitment of teachers in colleges in Karachi.

The city council on Wednesday approved only one resolution presented by Rehana Afroze which stated that the DO Colleges had been directed by the secretary of education not to follow the reduced fee structure announced by Nazim Karachi in a number of heads, including computer education, sport fee and admission fee.

The resolution furthers stated that this interference by secretary education is against the basic philosophy of devolution and demanded of the governor to direct the secretary to refrain from interfering in the affairs of the city government.

A number of members, including Rehana Afroze, Muslim Pervaiz, Najmi Alam and Mumtaz Wasi spoke on the occasion. Rehana Afroze said that the city Nazim and EDO Education have been bypassed by the secretary of education by giving directives directly to the DO.

Speakers deplored the continued authoritative attitude of the provincial departments into in city government affairs and said “it is our right to work according to local conditions”.

As per the agenda, questions and answers dominated the remaining time of the session.

On this occasion, a reply from the Liaquatabad Town regarding the details of their expenses was read out. It was in response to a question raised by Mr Siddique Rathore.

The Liaquatabad Town informed about the details of Rs9 million provided by the city government to which some objections were raised by the Siddique Rathore, upon which the convener of the house Tariq Hasan said that the Naib nazim of each the UC is the member of the town council and it is their duty to question the expenditures at this forum.

The second question was regarding all the details of the contracts of charged park-ing given by the city government.

The concerned department informed about the details of 25 charged parking sites out of which the department is operating 14 of them and 11 are being run by contractors. However, all were valid till June 30, and new ones are being auctioned for this fiscal.

The reply also contained timings and rates being charged from motorists and motorcyclists.

The council will now meet on Thursday.—PPI
