KHAIRPUR, July 12: Prompt action by villagers prevented a five-feet breach at Hingorja to widen and cause heavy damage to cotton crop on Thursday night.
The breach had developed at a section of Rohri Canal bank and gushing water started submerging the crop near Hingorja.
However, the villagers worked all the night and succeeded in plugging the breach.
They complained that the local contractor, who had recently undertaken the repair at this section, had carried out botched work which resulted in the breach.
The breach was the third in two weeks to have developed in Rohri Canal banks.
The villagers also pointed out that the height of the Canal’s banks at Tehri, Luqman, Daraza, Ranipur, Gadeji, Hingorja, Setharja and some other points was about 14 feet which might not stand strong currents. They warned that many a towns were vulnerable to floods.
