PESHAWAR, July 10: Opposing the proposed constitutional amendment package, introduction of Madaris ordinance and change in the Afghan policy, the Pakistan Muslim League and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam have asked the government to restore the 1973 Constitution and release the detained political workers.

Senior leaders of the two parties held a meeting here at Madni mosque, Namakmandi, on Wednesday and discussed various issues. Later, a joint statement was released.

The JUI delegation comprised party chief, Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Hafiz Hussain Ahmad while the PML was represented by its senior leader Syed Zafar Ali Shah, former chief minister Pir Sabir Shah and Khwaja Saad Rafiq.

According to a press release, the JUI chief called for a close collaboration among the political forces and said the political parties should adopt a joint line of action to restore Constitution and democracy.

He said the JUI was ready to cooperate with other political parties for the stability of the country, implementation of Islamic system and to foil the US designs for the region. The political parties would contest next elections on these issues, he added.

Syed Zafar Ali briefed the JUI chief about the negative aspects of the proposed constitutional amendment package. He said democratic forces in the country should forge unity and must not repeat their past mistakes to pull the country out of crisis.
