MANCHESTER, England, July 7: Sri Lanka repaired some dented pride by securing their first victory of the triangular one-day series with a 23-run win over England at Old Trafford Sunday.

Four successive defeats ended Sri Lanka’s chances of making the competition final, but they did not lack for motivation in dismissing England for 206 in 47.4 overs.

The result matters little for the hosts, who have already qualified for the final against India at Lord’s on July 13.

Although Kumar Sangakkara hit 70 off 79 balls for Sri Lanka, England’s occasional off-spinner Michael Vaughan reduced them to 229 all out off 49.4 overs with a career-best one-day bowling performance.

Vaughan finished with four for 22 off six overs before England began their reply brightly.

Openers Marcus Trescothick (27) and Nick Knight (29) scored briskly with some stylish shot-making before both were bowled by left-armer Nuwan Zoysa.

The rot then set in as England lost two wickets in three overs, with Vaughan caught and bowled by Upul Chandana and skipper Nasser Hussain run out — much to his disgust — by Marvan Atapattu for 28.

Jayasuriya finished with three for 38 off nine overs as every England batsman failed notably to build a significant score after a reasonable start.

Earlier, Sri Lanka, whose defeat to India on Saturday ended their hopes of making the series final, looked to Sangakkara for inspiration.

But he was dismissed when well-set on 70 and Sri Lanka lost their last six wickets for 39 runs.
