HAMBURG, Germany, July 7: Next Desert won the group one German Derby in impressive fashion Sunday to give trainer Andreas Schutz a clean sweep in the race.

The colt, ridden by Andrasch Starke, eased to a three length victory over stablemate Salve Regina. Tomori’s third place finish gave Schutz a 1-2-3 in the race, a feat he also achieved in 2000.

Starke elected to kick for home on Next Desert, who could now be aimed at the Prix de l’arc de Triomphe later in the year, just before turning into the straight and quickly put the result beyond doubt.

Godolphin’s Mamool, the sole foreign runner, was a well held fifth under Frankie Dettori. The Royal Ascot winner was beaten 15 lengths.—Reuters
