KARACHI, Nov 2: The city government has started work on the second phase of repairing and carpeting of roads and Rs30.6 million is being paid to the 18 towns for the execution of the task.
Every town is expected to secure Rs2 million out of the total amount which would enable them to carry out the job promptly and expeditiously, starting from next week.
It may be recalled here that this would be the second instalment released by the city government for carrying development activities in Karachi. The first instalment was released for the 18 towns during the previous month.
The amount disbursed among the towns would enable them to improve the condition of roads and streets.
The city Nazim, during his speech at the council meeting, had informed the councillors that work for improvement of city roads would soon get underway as all towns would be furnished the required amount.
In the first phase of construction, work was carried out on M.A. Jinnah Road, Mauripur Road, Sharah-i-Pakistan and other major roads of the city.
NGO SCRUTINY: The city government has started scrutiny of all registered NGOs in the city to ascertain which of them are active and which are restricted to mere papers.
At a meeting with over 42 officers of Grade 17 of the Social Welfare Department, Sindh, asked to report to the city government, presided over by the EDO Community Development, Syed Tahir Shahbaz, it was decided that the city government’s department of social welfare would be reactivated so that the works being done for community development through NGOs could be accelerated.
The meeting was informed that there were over 1,800 non- governmental welfare, social and literary organizations in the city but there were only few among them which were active for social welfare and community development.
On the occasion Tahir Shahbaz directed that inspection of these NGOs be completed before Jan 7, 2002 to ascertain those organizations which are really active so that a policy could be chalked out accordingly.
It was decided that the city government will gear up social welfare activities with the cooperation of NGOs. The NGOs found active in the practical field after inspection would be extended all possible help.
BAN: The acting Nazim of Karachi, Tariq Hasan, on Friday banned the use of loudspeakers in mosques for purposes other than Azan and Jumma Khutaba.
In a letter, the DIG Karachi and all the SSPs have been directed to enforce these instructions strictly and a weekly report be submitted in this regard.—PPI/APP
