Highway blockade continues

SARGODHA, July 2: A transporter on Jhang-Sargodha route has been blocking the road for three days now to stop the vehicles of a rival transporter.

The administration is said to be reluctant to proceed against him.

According to reports reaching here, a Multan-bound coach (KBA 4545) of the Shalimar Transport was hit by one run by Naubahar Company (ID 7082) near Gillwala. Naubahar Company then reportedly blocked Sargodha-Jhang road near Jehanian Shah village, stopping the vehicles of the rival transporters. This forced the passengers to wait for several hours in scorching heat.

Sources said the Elite Force rescued the passengers but had the police had yet to act against the trasnporters.

ENCROACHMENTS: The Cantonment Board anti-encroachment staff demolished parts of about a dozen houses in Jan Colony here on Monday evening.

Several Christian families lived in the Jan Colony houses adjacent to a plaza. Tahir Naveed, the minority councillor of the district council, said the action was meant to help the plaza owner who wanted to acquire the land at throwaway prices.

A Cantonment Board employee, who sought anonymity, said the residents had beaten up the anti-encroachment staff. He admitted, however, that the Board had not notified them about the action.

SHOT DEAD: A woman was shot dead in Midh Ranjha area.

Police said Rasoolan Bibi was shot dead in her sleep by Nazir Ahmad, Bashir Ahmad and Amjad, whose sister she was accused to have killed by burning three years ago.

Rasoolan and her daughter Fatima were convicted by the sessions court but acquitted by the High Court.

MOTORCYCLE SNATCHED: Two armed men took away a motorbike from one Kalb-i-Abbas on Kot Momen-Moazzamabad Road last evening.

PO ESCAPES: Zafar, a proclaimed offender, reportedly managed to escape, breaking the police cordon at Bekh Lurka village. The police have registered a case against Ahmad Nawaz for harbouring the proclaimed offender.

FLEE FROM CUSTODY: One Irfan Ahmad, reportedly detained for fraud, fled from police custody with handcuffs.

ASI Muhammad Riaz and Constable Arif were escorting the man to City police station after securing his remand from the court. When they reached Fawwara Chowk in Katchery Bazaar, he made away in handcuffs.

The SP Sargodha has suspended the ASI and the constable from service and directed the SHO concerned to register a case against them for negligence.
