HYDERABAD, July 2: The Nazim of Taluka City Council, Haji Moiunuddin Sheikh, has ordered an inquiry against a woman councillor, Naseem Bano, for alleged extortion.

A prominent doctor, Raeez Pervez, had complained to the TTC chief that the councillor had extorted Rs15,000 from him while a resident of Pathan Colony, Khadija Bano, accused her of backtracking in a property deal.

The Nazim has referred the matter to the Ikhlaqiat (ethics) Committee.

Dr Pervez claimed that on May 14, the councillor and her assistant, Muhammad Ali, visited his trauma centre to inform him that the HDA intended to demolish illegal construction outside his clinic and that she, too, had received a lot of complaints in this regard from the residents of the area. According to the doctor, Ms Bano offered him a certificate, to escape the demolition, for which she demanded Rs15,000.

He said that he had paid Rs10,000 to her which did not satisfy Ms Bano who claimed that other members (of the council) had also a share in the amount. The next day, he added, Mohammad Ali came again and demanded Rs2,000 from the balance payment. His demand was turned down, the doctor added.

The other complainant, Ms Khadija, claimed that the councillor had sold her a house for Rs590,000 and received Rs100,000 as down payment. Another amount of Rs40,000 was paid to the councillor for utilities to be made available to the house and it was decided that the balance would be paid at the time of possession of the property and signing of a sale deed.

At the stipulated time, the complainant said, the councillor refused to honour the deal or refund the money.
