PESHAWAR, June 28: The provincial government has earmarked Rs10.98 billion for the education sector for the next financial year, which constitutes 22.2 per cent of the total budgetary estimates.

The total estimated receipts of education sector were about Rs135 million, which were more than the revised budgetary estimates of Rs129 million for the previous fiscal year (2001-2002).

For the development programmes, the government has earmarked Rs2,048 million, which is 102 per cent more than the allocations made in the previous year.

Of the Rs10.98 billion, the government has allocated 59.63 per cent for the elementary education, 8 per cent for the secondary education, 6.5 per cent for colleges, three per cent for technical education and .87 per cent for other activities.

The administration, the biggest recipient of the non-development expenditures, has received Rs397 million followed by Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) which has been given Rs223 million. An amount of Rs714m has been allocated for universities, colleges and institutes.

For secondary education the government has allocated Rs3,096 million, for middle school 1,342 million, and for primary education Rs4,781 million.

Sports and recreational activities have been given no money.

This year, the government will recruit 2,000 teachers on contract basis, build additional rooms in 1,022 girls primary schools, 1311 primary schools will be covered with boundary walls and provided with toilet and drinking water facilities while rehabilitation of 97 college will be completed.

The admission ratio will be increased at primary, middle and higher school levels.
