KARACHI, June 27: A clean-up operation was launched at the site of the Lyari Expressway Project on Thursday morning.
An official of the anti-encroachment cell of the City Government, Abdul Malik Khan, present at the site, confirmed that the operation began at 9am and continued till 7pm without any resistance.
He said the operation was launched at Akbar Road, Shershah and would continue on Friday as well. According to him, several illegal commercial and residential units were demolished.
He said that the affected people were being suitably compensated and checks were given to them at the site.
Meanwhile, the Action Committee for Civic Problems condemned the action of the National Highway Authority and director of the Lyari Expressway Project.
The committee chairman, Naveed Baseer, in a communication to the City Nazim, termed the action in violation of the agreement reached between the committee, NHA and the City Government some three months back.
It was decided that in future all actions would be taken with mutual consent.
He claimed that Thursday’s action had created harassment among the people settled along the banks of the Lyari River.
