PESHAWAR, June 27: Seven “gambling dens” have been established in the guise of stalls at a funfair which commenced at Jinnah Park, here from June 23, alleged two Pasban leaders, Jehanzeb Khan and Azizur Rehman, here on Thursday.

They told Dawn that the seven stalls were stated to be paying about Rs150,000 daily to the city government, which seemed to be a major source of income generation.

On the occasion of the centenary celebrations of the NWFP, the same number of stalls were established during the funfair at the same venue and the city government received Rs175,000 daily from them, they claimed.

They said in the on-going funfair, one stall of dot shooting, four stalls of boll boxes, one lottery and one ring throw stall have been set up. The people first change the currency and get cards of different prices from a stall established in one of the corner of these stalls, which is called a ‘bank.’

The administration of the these stalls issued cards of the value of 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 rupees to the ravellers and exchanged the cards with rupees again when they finished their games, they said.

But the administration intentionally wrote only one per cent value against the actual amount to hide the stake money, they alleged.

“For Rs50 card, they have mentioned its value 50 paisa, likewise for Rs1,000 card, the value is written Rs10,” they said.

The Pasban leaders claimed that on Tuesday night the Eastern Police Station conducted a raid on these stalls and arrested 14 persons. The police also seized Rs40,000 stake money and recovered various cards and Rs13,000 during body search of the persons accused of “gambling.”
