KHARTOUM, June 26: Nisar A. Memon, Minister for Information and Media Development, has called upon Islamic countries to work for the eradication of extremism and terrorism from “within our societies” and “in the outside world.”
Speaking at the “Twenty-Ninth Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers (ICFM)” here on Tuesday, he said it was equally important that we upheld and supported the just Islamic causes and the legitimate freedom struggles of Muslims against oppression and denial of their fundamental right to freedom and dignity.
“As nothing can justify terrorism and killing of innocent people, similarly under no circumstances can we condone prolongation of occupation and subjugation of a people regardless of their colour or belief.
“As Muslims we deeply care and will continue to do so for the suffering of the peoples of Palestine and Kashmir who have waged a valiant struggle spanning more than half a century to gain what is the most cherished human aspiration — freedom.
“The global fight against terrorism must not obscure the sanctity of their cause and the political and moral imperative to respect their rights in accordance with the international legality and norms of justice.
The minister said: “We must resolutely counter the attempts to spread prejudice and misgivings about our noble religion. Islam stands for peace, tolerance and social justice. It rejects violence and conflict. In the true spirit of our faith, we must work for international understanding, harmony, justice and human dignity and freedom.
“Palestine in the Middle East and Kashmir in South Asia have been challenges to the international morality and consciousness for over half a century. They represent the oldest problems where the people have been denied freedom and dignity and are subject to ruthless state terrorism. These bleeding wounds have caused enormous sufferings and desperation in the world.
“The protracted struggle of the Palestinian people has tested their resolve to the limits of human endurance. They have waged an epic struggle and made colossal sacrifices. Yet their tragedy continues unabated with relentless Israeli aggression and excessive use of force against unarmed Palestinians.”
He said peace can be established in the Middle East only on the foundation of a Palestinian State with Al-Quds its capital living side by side with Israel and established on the territories under occupation since 1967.—APP
