FAISALABAD, June 24: Another crackdown on foreigners illegally staying in the religious seminaries of the Punjab will be launched soon, it was learnt.
Official sources told Dawn on Monday that intelligence agencies were collecting details about accommodation facilities, links of students, presence of foreigners and source of incomes of all deeni madaris in the province.
The government had received reports that many foreigners had been staying in the deeni madaris without completing legal formalities and a large number of seminaries were receiving donations from other countries.
“Most foreigners are Afghans because they have no document or permit to reside in Pakistan,” source added.
The Interior Ministry decided that students belonging to Northern Areas would also be interrogated.
Source said that action would be taken against the heads of seminaries found involved in providing wrong information about the presence of actual number of students, their whereabouts, links with any militant groups and sources of income.

Standing committees, they said, had become “show-pieces” and members and chairmen had not so far been given their due rights. Proposals of the elected members were also not being included in the annual budget, they added.
