KARACHI, June 22: The Sindh Secretary for Agriculture and Weights and Measures, Abdul Rasheed Memon, has directed officials of the Weights and Measures Department to take stern action in cases of manipulated weights and measures, particularly against petrol pumps providing lesser quantity of petrol and diesel.

He said that dispensers installed at petrol pumps be properly sealed after verification. He issued the directive at the departmental briefing of the weights and measures department here on Saturday.

The secretary referred to complaints received by him that many petrol pumps were not providing accurate quantity of petrol and diesel.

The customers were paying increased prices of the fuel and it was dishonesty if they were not supplied petrol and diesel in correct quantity.

Rasheed Memon directed the inspectors and assistant controllers to properly punch the seals during inspection of pumps and check their seals during rechecking.

He set up a three-member committee to pay surprise visit to petrol pumps. It would take action in cases where pumps without seals will be detected.

The secretary was informed that during fiscal 2001-2002, the weights and measures department was given a recovery target of Rs50 million which was achieved by the officials. From Karachi alone Rs35 million was recovered as fees and challan. —APP
