KARACHI, June 14: Investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are coming in for technical assistance in the investigations of the car bomb explosion that left 10 dead and many injured and breached the wall of the US consulate here on Friday.

These investigations would be carried out in collaboration with the local police, the U.S. Consul General, John K. Bauman told journalists during a visit to the scene of the incident.

“In fact,” he said, “two groups would be arriving, one would be of Marines to enhance security.” The consul general, who was in the building at the time of the explosion, did not say when they would arrive.

The “consulate building was reverberating from the blast,” said Mr Bauman when asked to explain the situation.

Asked about the security measures to protect the building, the consul general said: “We have very advanced warning system but this one went off without that”.

He thought that the vehicle was “intentionally” driven close to the consulate wall and detonated when it reached the place of explosion, creating a crater.

To emphasize the intensity of the explosion Mr Bauman said parts of the tie-rod of a vehicle landed in the lawn of his residence about 300 metres away on Fatima Jinnah Road, hurting his gardener.

Asked whether it was a suicide bombing the consul general said it would be better for the Pakistani police to describe that. He nevertheless said suicide bombing is not part of the culture here except for the attack on a church in Islamabad, and the explosion outside Sheraton Hotel on May 8.

Town Police Officer, Saddar Town, Tarik Khokhar, who was present there said the police are conducting investigations with an open mind. With regard to May 8 incident, he added that it was still not clear whether it was a suicide bombing or not.
