PORT-OF-SPAIN (Trinidad), June 13: Medium pace bowler Scott Styris claimed a record-breaking six wickets for 25 as New Zealand beat the West Indies by nine runs to keep his country’s one-day series with the West Indies alive.
Styris followed up his own hard hitting innings of 63 in 71 balls with a bowling performance that is a New Zealand one-day record.
He is only the ninth player in one-day history to score more than 50 runs and take five wickets in the same game.
New Zealand won the game by nine runs when the West Indies ran out of balls at 202 for nine after the visitors had scored 212-5 when rain stopped play after 44.2 overs.
Styris had earlier shared a 122-run partnership with Nathan Astle who finished unbeaten on 91.
Astle was running out of partners when Styris came in to boost the run rate with a brisk 63 in 75 minutes, including four fours and two sixes.
Set a target of 212 off 33 overs, calculated under the Duckworth/Lewis method, the West Indies got off to flying start with big hitter Chris Gayle taking advantage of some poor bowling by pacemen Shane Bond and Daryl Tuffey.
But New Zealand brought on in-form medium pace bowler Paul Hitchcock who was rewarded when he bowled Shivnarine Chanderpaul for 14 in the seventh over.
Bowling a clever mix of leg and off-breakers, Styris then served notice of his intention to do something special by taking the prize wicket of Brian Lara, edging to wicket-keeper Chris Nevin.
