KARACHI, June 12: Secretary information PPP, Taj Haider, said on Wednesday that a high-level meeting of the PPP, chaired by its leader Ms Benazir Bhutto, was being held in Dubai, and it was expected to take some important decisions regarding the forthcoming general elections.
He said that a strategy for the safe return of the PPP chairperson before the October polls would also come under discussion.
Meanwhile, a party source informed that Ms Benazir Bhutto was facing strong pressure from within the party on award of party tickets for the elections with a majority of party workers strongly insisting that the PPP award tickets to new faces, especially those belonging to the middle class.
Some central leaders of the party too have confirmed that the pressure exists. One of them said that several traditional candidates would not be eligible to contest the elections because of the graduation condition. Another leader said it was time the party decided who it belonged to, the masses or the elite.
To make a final decision in that regard, the source said, the chairperson had convened a special meeting in Dubai, attended by Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Raza Rabbani, Yousuf Talpur and others.
PPP CHIEFS’ STATEMENT: The Pakistan Peoples Party on Wednesday warned the government that any attempt to prevent its chairperson Benazir Bhutto from coming back would be considered a conspiracy against the country.
PPP provincial chiefs, Qazim Zia, Nisar Khuro, Khawaja Mohammad Tariq Hoti and Javed Ahmed, in a joint statement issued here on Wednesday, claimed that the people of Pakistan would give a warm welcome to their “beloved leader” on her return as the Bhuttos had rendered “innumerable sacrifices for the national cause”.
They said that Z.A Bhutto had struggled against the oppressive classes and the remnants of the former dictatorship were still opposing his daughter vehemently, but she would never leave the poor classes alone “in this crucial hour” and return home at any cost.
They also appealed to the judiciary to play its role to ensure their leader’s safe return “as any wrong decision will lead to serious consequences for the country.—PPI
