KARACHI, June 10: Seventeen vehicles — eight cars and nine motorcycles — were either hijacked or stolen in the city on Monday, the police said.

Four cars were hijacked. Four others were stolen.

Two motorcycles were hijacked. Seven others were stolen.

The police also claimed on Monday to have recovered four cars and 10 motorcycles in the city.

ACID ATTACK: A young woman was seriously injured when her former husband threw acid on her face in Pak Colony on late on Sunday night.

The police said that Ishrat Bibi, aged 23, was asleep in her home in Muslimabad, Multan Para, Old Golimar, when her former husband Safdar Husain, with his accomplices identified as Majeeda, Afzal Nazeer and Ajmal, sneaked into the house and threw acid on her face. The four men escaped after throwing acid on the woman.

Ishrat Bibi was admitted to Civil Hospital.

Sources at the hospital said that the woman suffered 18 per cent burns to the face, chest and shoulders. Her face had been disfigured and her eyesight been partially affected. She was admitted to the burns ward.

The police said that the woman recently married Inayat Husain Bhatti, a labourer, after she obtained divorce, through court, from Safdar. The woman had three children by her former husband, who were under his custody. The attack appeared to be an act of revenge.

None of the absconding suspects were arrested when this report was filed.

DROWNED: A small boy drowned in an underground water tank in Mehmoodabad on Monday.

The police said that Bobby, aged seven, had been missing since Saturday from his home in Azam Basti. On Monday, he was found dead in an underground water tank in an under-construction building in Azam Basti.

The body was recovered from the tank and sent to Jinnah Post-graduate Centre for post-mortem.

The police said that the boy was the youngest son of a fruit seller.

FALLS TO DEATH: A young labourer died after he fell from an under-construction building in Federal B-Industrial Area on Monday.

The police said that Sajjad Husain, aged 25, was working at an under- construction building when he fell on the ground from the fourth floor.

He was rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

DROWNING VICTIMS: The bodies of two men who had drowned in the sea off Hawkesbay beach on Sunday were fished out on Monday.

Edhi sources said that Sajid, aged 30, and Mohammed Aslam, aged 24, had gone for picnic to Hawkesbay beach, and they drowned in the sea.

The police said that Sajid was resident of New Karachi and Aslam of Sultanabad.

DIES OF BURNS: A young man who had suffered burns a few days ago died in a hospital on Monday.

The police said that Mohammed Anwar Chaudhry, aged 23, had suffered burns in his home in Hijrat Colony on June 5. He was admitted to Civil Hospital where he died.
