TOBA TEK SINGH, Oct 30: A train derailed on Tuesday morning at on the Shorkot Cantonment-Kamalia section between Chak 325-GB and 328-GB.

Four compartments of the Ravi Express which runs between Shorkot Cantonment and Lahore via Kamalia-Jaranwala section derailed six km away from the Shorkot Cantonment.

A majority of passengers remained unhurt as the train was moving slowly. About half a dozen passengers sustained minor injuries.

The passengers returned to Shorkot by tractor trolleys lent by villagers.

Rail traffic on the track was suspended till the filing of this report at 8pm on Tuesday.

PR Lahore division engineer Chaudhry Farzand Ali visited the site. He told newsmen the aging track needed replacement. He said wooden sleepers where the accident took place were too weak to bear the load.

When contacted, a police official told this correspondent the postmortem report had not been provided by the DHQ Hospital’s doctors yet.

Hafiz Abdul Ghanni, 65, and his wife Shahnaz were asleep in their house when they were burnt to death. However, the room did not receive many burn scars.

Some villagers told the correspondent that Ghani sold his farmland for Rs350,000 some two years ago. They said the deceased drew the amount from the bank a few months back and invested it in some business.

They apprehended the people who had obtained money from him might have killed him.

A villager disclosed that a scar was seen on his nose however, the police did not confirm it.

SMOKING: Ban on smoking among students will be imposed in all the institutions in the district.

This was stated by district Nazim Chaudhry Muhammad Ashfaq during a seminar on ‘rising trend of drug addiction in youth’ held in the Government Higher Secondary School, Sindhlian Wali on Tuesday.

The seminar was conducted under the auspices of the Anjuman Khidmat-i-Insanyat. The Nazim urged parents and teachers to force the students staying away from the evil of smoking.

He announced that a separate ward for the treatment of drug addicts would be established in the DHQ Hospital.

He also promised to provide an electric cooler from his pocket and said two class rooms would be set up in the school.

In his welcome address, Anjuman representative Khadim Husain informed the participants that the organization was willing to set up a free hospital.

Kamalia tehsil Nazim Syed Akhtar Abbas Kirmani, union council Nazim Syed Khalid Mustafa Bukhari, Asad Abbas, Anjum Shahzad Jugnoo, Dr Ramzan, Prof Turabul Hassan, Dr Zafar Iqbal Jakhar and tehsil sports officer Attaur Rahman Baluch were also present on the occasion.
