KARACHI, June 7: Sindh Governor Mohammedmian Soomro has called upon educational institutions to adjust their programmes to the needs of people in all areas.

Speaking at the 8th convocation ceremony of Preston Institute of Management Science and Technology here on Friday, he observed that no country has ever been able to achieve rapid progress without a well-developed system of higher education.

“Our greatest national asset lies in the potential skills of our people and our economic and social progress depends on how we develop them.”

With this aim in view, he added, the Sindh government is encouraging private institutions to join hands with the government to meet the current demands of this century.

Mr Soomro pointed out that as a nation we couldn’t be satisfied with less than the most exciting standards of achievement as we look to our institutions of higher education for the production of leaders and intellectuals.

“The country which is prepared to invest in skills and abilities of its most gifted citizens, will only reap the rich rewards in national development and international prestige,” he remarked.

Highlighting the importance of higher education, he asserted that education should aim to prepare culture and instil the idea of progress through self-realization. It must enhance the sense of civic responsibility in the new generation to make them good citizens, he added.

Higher education must be concerned with the formation and development of character as well as with the acquisition of knowledge, he said.

The chairman of PIMSAT, Dr Basit, presented annual report while rector and deputy director also spoke.

Later, the governor conferred degrees and gold medals to the passing-out students of various programmes.—PPI
