KARACHI, June 6: The Environmental Protection Agency, Sindh, in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency , will soon launch a campaign to assess the air quality in Karachi, said the director-general of the EPA, Sindh, Shafiq Ahmed Khoso here on Thursday.

Talking to APP, he said that with the financial assistance of JICA mobile laboratories and a fixed monitoring station would be set up to collect data.

The JICA programme would continue for five years, he added.

Similar campaigns have already been launched in other major cities of the country with the assistance of JICA, Mr Khoso said, adding that the EPA Pakistan had recently carried out an ambient air quality study in Lahore, Rawalpindi and Islamabad to assess the pollution levels in traffic-congested areas.

He said the Sindh EPA had also launched a campaign, in collaboration with the traffic police, to check air pollution caused by faulty vehicles. The Sindh EPA chief said that the city had been hit by all types of pollution and various NGOs were also assisting the EPA in its efforts to control this alarming situation.—APP
