ISLAMABAD, April 30: President Pervez Musharraf has said the government is committed to promote healthy trade unionism and expressed his hope that workers will strengthen the country’s institutions by striking a balance between rights and responsibilities.
“This government is fully committed to promote healthy trade unionism in the country,” the president said in his message on the occasion of May Day, being celebrated on Wednesday.
He said the government had removed the ban on Water and Power Development Authority union and restriction on union activity in postal department. He said he was confident that workers would help in improving the quality of service and efficiency.
He said the government had taken a number of labour welfare measures. “These measures are aimed at ameliorating the lot of the working people and promoting their welfare in a number of areas, including education of their children and respectable housing facilities,” he said.
Musharraf said the package of labour reforms had been given legal cover by bringing radical changes in labour laws.—APP
