KARACHI, March 28: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan has demanded of the Sindh government to abandon the proposed denationalization of educational institutions, saying it is detrimental to the interests of the people.
“I’m personally convinced that the proposed denationalization is harmful and if the government is seeking measurers to pursue its announced goal, it should hold a referendum for soliciting the opinion of the general public”, he said while speaking at a reception hosted by Islami Jamiat Talaba to welcome the newcomers at the Government Saify Institute of Technology here on Thursday.
He asked the Sindh government that if it was reluctant to abandon the denationalization of educational institutions or had some reservations against it, the process be halted for, at least, a period of three years so that they could strive for bringing an improvement in educational institutions.
Terming the policy of nationalizing the educational institutions a disaster, he said the present proposal of denationalization of these institutions would prove to be a blow to education in the city.
The City Government, he said, had dispatched several letters to the Sindh governor and the cabinet, requesting them to abandon the proposal for the sake of Karachiites, adding he would continue to resist the move.
Realizing the state of uncertainty in educational institutions, he said he was aware of scores of development projects in a number of institutions which were in abeyance owing to uncertain conditions.
Earlier, the college principal welcomed the Nazim and informed him about the problems being faced by the institute.
Later, the City Nazim inaugurated a book fair, organized by the IJT workers for newcomers at the college.
EXPRESSWAY: A delegation of Jamaat-i-Islami Karachi, led by its Naib Amir, Mohammed Hussain Mehanti, met the City Nazim, Naimatullah Khan and conveyed the concern of affectees of the Lyari Expressway project.
During the meeting, they said more than one plan was being implemented with regard to construction of the expressway.
The Nazim assured the delegation that as per approved plan of the National Highway Authority, it would be ensured that no house is unnecessarily demolished and no undue loss is caused to anyone.
He said in order to ensure transparency in the entire process, a high-level meeting had been convened in the next few days in which the delegation leader Mr Mehanti too will be invited.
Nazim Karachi said the expressway was a most essential project for the city, but the city government would not allow any injustice to be done to the citizens.—PPI/APP
