KARACHI, Feb 7: A doctor was shot dead by four armed men who had barged into his house in Landhi No.4 on Monday. According to police, the armed men opened fire as the inmates resisted their entry.

Dr Owais Hashmi, 35, and his father, Dr Naimat Hashmi, sustained injuries in the firing but the intruders took to their heels without taking away any valuables from the house, police added.

Both the victims were rushed to the JPMC where Dr Owais was pronounced dead on arrival and Dr Naimat was admitted. Police said the deceased was a dentist and father of three.

ACCIDENT: An elderly man was knocked down by a hit-and-run vehicle in North Nazimabad on Monday. The man, Ishaq, 60, was crossing a road near Hyderi Market when hit by the vehicle. He was rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival, police said.

FIRE: A big fire broke out in a five-storey building near Bara Imambargah, in Kharadar, on Monday morning.

A spokesman for the fire department said that fire swept through the third and fourth floors of the Metro Building. Two garment godowns were gutted, he added. As many as 10 fire tenders were employed to extinguish the fire which had started at around 7.00am and was put out at about 4:00pm.

He said that initially one fire tender was sent to the spot on receiving the information but the fire department had to dispatch nine more fire tenders later. The cause of the fire or extent of damage could not be ascertained immediately, he said, adding that no one was killed or injured in the incident.

ROBBED: A senior reporter of Dawn was robbed of his mobile phone and Rs13,000 near Arts Council intersection on Monday.

Mr Shamimur Rehman was walking towards the press club when robbed by two armed men riding a motorcycle on the way. The robbers also snatched some documents the reporter was holding in his hands. An FIR was lodged at the Preedy police station.
