KARACHI: Thin attendance

Published January 9, 2005

KARACHI, Jan 8: Attendance in schools and colleges was affected due to non-availability of buses, coaches and wagons on Saturday.

Attendance at the University of Karachi and other public sector universities remained relatively thin, despite the fact that point buses plied the roads. The University of Karachi also made arrangement for special buses from NIPA to campus to facilitate the candidates of BCom (external) annual examinations.

A KU spokesman said that examinations were held peacefully and attendance was recorded up to mark. However, sources on the campus said that frequency of teaching classes was relatively poor.

Since Saturday is observed as a weekly holiday by many of the private schools, their students stayed comfortable at homes. However, the institutions which remained open, including the government and private schools, witnessed a decrease in attendance of their students and teachers. Classes at many of the government colleges also could not be held.

The contract carriers providing pick and drop facility to school and college students mostly remained off the road, fearing retaliation in case they appeared on the road.
