KARACHI: Nazim seeks UNDP's help

KARACHI, Dec 11: City Nazim has sought UNDP's cooperation in rehabilitation of kutchi abadi residents. During a meeting with UNDP Representative Onder Yucer at his office on Saturday , the nazim told him that there were 538 kutchi abadis in Karachi which constituted 52 per cent of the city's population and life there was below the poverty level. He further said that about 8,000 tons garbage was generated daily in the city.

The nazim said that the city government had distributed lease forms in 278 kutchi abadis in order to regularize them. He said that steps were being taken for providing all facilities to the residents of kutchi abadis.

Onder Yucer said that the UNDP would launch its programme for poverty alleviation in poor localities of Karachi in January with the cooperation of local community.

EMPRESS MARKET: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan has said that Empress Markets and other bazaars under the jurisdiction of city government will soon be beautified.

He stated this while inaugurating the newly renovated Gole Market in Nazimabad on Friday evening.

Naimatullah Khan said that more than 30 projects had been pending for the last 20 years. He said that the city government had accomplished all of them on priority basis.

The city government, he said, completed three major projects during the last two months. Besides, he said that development of parks had been widely appreciated by citizens and people in large numbers along with their families were visiting these parks.

He recalled that when he took over as city nazim, the shops used to be closed down by 7pm. However, with the efforts of city government, Karachi had again been turned into the city of lights. "Today, Karachi is a city of greenery and parks," he said.

He told the gathering that under the city government, OPD service would start at cardiac hospital in Federal B. Area from Jan 28, 2005.

He said that the city was in dire need of more cardiac hospitals in addition to the National Institute of Cardio-vascular Diseases.

Referring to a survey, he pointed out that on an average six heart patients expire daily before getting any medical aid.

In view of this situation, eight heart centres were also being established in the city, where patients could be provided emergency aid.

COMMITTEES: City Nazim Naimatullah Khan has dissolved the steering committees for Malir and Lyari Development Projects with immediate effect. The two committees were constituted through a notification on June 19, 2004. -APP
