Shahzad sparkles in drawn match

KARACHI, Nov 7: Shahzad Malik's unbeaten 131 was the highlight of what proved to be a dreary final day of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy match between Karachi Blues and Sialkot at the National Stadium on Sunday.

Karachi Blues batted gamely to reach 162 for three in the second innings after being set an impossible target of 438 for victory in just 39 overs. Test rejects Shadab Kabir (64 off 89 balls, nine fours and one six) and Hasan Raza (53 not out off 60 balls, seven fours) gained useful batting practice for the next round of matches, scheduled to begun from Nov 27.

Earlier, Sialkot declared their second innings at 418 for seven with Shahzad finishing on 131 after resuming at his overnight score of 38.

Shahzad, who struck 20 fours and one six during his 184-ball knock in 260 minutes, found a reliable partner in Mansoor Amjad. The pair put on 132 for the seventh wicket in 95 minutes with Mansoor hitting 64 off 74 balls, including nine boundaries.

Skipper Hafiz Khalid blasted four fours and a brace of sixes in making 41 off 44 balls.

Test fast bowler Mohammad Sami bowled a total of 60.1 overs in the match to allay fears about his fitness ahead of the Australian tour. Sami, who missed the second Test win over Sri Lanka because of a groin strain, claimed a match haul of seven for 197.
