According to Monday's Reuters/Zogby poll, Mr Bush edged into a one-point 48- to 47-per cent national lead over Mr Kerry.
Most of the three-day tracking poll was taken after the airing of a threatening new videotape from al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. Only three per cent of voters remained undecided.
* Oil prices fell heavily, taking US crude below $50 on speculation that a Kerry victory could ease geopolitical friction that helped spark this year's record high prices.
QUOTES
* "This is the choice, this is the moment of accountability for America. It's a moment where the world is watching what you're going to do. All of the hopes and dreams of our country are on the line today," Mr Kerry told an airport rally before leaving Florida, which decided the 2000 election after the US Supreme Court stopped its recount.
* "I'm confident we're going to win. The finish line is in sight and I just want to assure you I've got the energy and the optimism and the enthusiasm to cross the line," Mr Bush told reporters at Pittsburgh International Airport before a rally in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania.
* "Right after the bin Laden tape was released, the Kerry campaign took a poll to see what his response should be. He put his finger in the air to see which way the political wind was blowing," Vice President Dick Cheney told a rally in Hawaii.
CAMPAIGN ISSUES
* US forces in Iraq battle guerillas in Ramadi and pound Fallujah, but there is no sign that an all-out offensive to retake the cities has begun.
* An election win for Mr Kerry could make the United States tougher and more cautious on trade, while a victory for Mr Bush would keep the country on the path to more trade deals, experts say.
