WASHINGTON, Oct 21: The United States on Thursday refused to wish Fidel Castro a speedy recovery from bone fractures sustained in an accidental stumble, saying the Cuban leader's injuries were of "little concern" compared to the suffering of the Cuban people.

"We heard that Castro fell," State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said, professing ignorance as to which bones he may have damaged. "You'd have to check with the Cubans to find out what's broken about Mr Castro.

"We, obviously, have expressed our views about what's broken in Cuba," he told reporters, reiterating Washington's litany of complaints about Castro and his communist government which have been the target of a US trade embargo for more than 40 years.

Asked whether the United States would wish Castro a speedy recovery, Boucher replied: "No" and said Washington was far more concerned about the welfare of the Cuban people under what he called and undemocratic and repressive regime.

"The situation of Mr Castro is little concern to us, but, unfortunately, of enormous importance to the people of Cuba, who have suffered very long under his rule," he said. "We think that the kind of rule that Cuba has had should be ended."

Fidel Castro, 78, tripped late on Wednesday at an art school graduation ceremony, breaking his left knee and right arm and the Cuban government confirmed that the veteran leader was being treated for the injuries.

He quickly got up with the help of his bodyguards and, sitting on a chair, hastened to assure the audience he remained in control and full of enthusiasm.

In a statement, the government assured Cubans that Castro remains in good health, is able to continue working and advised the island's 11 million people to stay calm.

PUNS: Senior US officials were seen amusing themselves with puns about the Castro incident and their desire to see the end of the Cuban leader's government.

"We've been looking forward to Castro's fall for years but this isn't what we had in mind," one State Department official said when asked what Washington thought of Fidel Castro's tripping. "It's a sign of a falling regime," joked another official.

The officials, whose comments were made only half in jest, reiterated Washington's litany of complaints about Castro and his communist government.

Mr Castro also joked about seeing pictures of him on the floor in Thursday's international media and voiced confidence he would again make front page news all over the world -AFP
