BIRMINGHAM (England), June 2: Matthew Hoggard and Andy Caddick swept England to victory over Sri Lanka by an innings and 111 runs in the second Test Sunday with more than a day to spare.
Sri Lanka, 383 behind after the first innings, were bowled out for 272 in the second session on the fourth day, giving England a 1-0 lead in the three-Test series.
Hoggard finished with five for 92 and Caddick took three for 67.
The tourists began the day on 132 for two, but Hoggard gave England the perfect start by dispatching Marvan Atapattu for 56 with the 15th delivery of the day, uprooting his off stump as the opener played on.
Mahela Jayawardene moved to his half-century shortly afterwards but then fell to the lively Caddick, nicking an outside edge to Graham Thorpe at first slip for 59.
The overnight pair had added 105 for the third wicket, and England were then held up again as Aravinda de Silva and Hashan Tillekeratne added 77 for the fifth wicket.
De Silva drove beautifully through the off side and stroked the ball smoothly off his legs, but Tillekeratne had a moment of good fortune on 22 when he was missed at short leg by Michael Vaughan off the left-arm spin of Ashley Giles.
However, England took the second new ball soon after lunch and Caddick seized two wickets in two deliveries as Sri Lanka crumbled, losing five wickets for 39.
