KARACHI, Sept 4: Substandard concrete used in construction of Liaquatabad Flyover caused cracks in one portion of the flyover, well-informed sources said on Saturday.

City Nazim Naimatullah Khan had set up an inquiry committee to ascertain the cause of cracks in Liaquatabad Flyover. Sources said that the committee had finalized the report and submitted it with the city nazim and DCO Karachi.

It was learnt that some cores of the damage portion had been sent to laboratory for confirming the findings of the committee.

Meanwhile, the chief engineers of works and services department in different zones of the city have been asked to submit a report about bridges in different areas of the city.

"Chief Engineers will have to submit this report with the city government by Sept 7 after conducting a survey of these bridges," official concerned said.

He said that this step had been taken to ascertain present physical condition of these bridges so that remedial measures could be taken.

EDO (Works and Services) Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui said that a consultant firm had also been hired to inspect physical structure of Natha Khan Bridge, constructed about three to four decades ago. "The firm will carry out stability test and suggest strategy for rectification of defects in it," he added. -PPI
