Tribe given fresh warning

WANA, May 15: The administration in the volatile South Waziristan tribal region on Saturday warned the Ahmadzai Wazirs to persuade a tribal militant, Nek Muhammad, by Sunday morning for the registration of foreigners or action will be taken against the entire tribe.

The warning came from South Waziristan's administrator Asmatullah Ghandapur after a delegation of Ahmadzai Wazirs apprised him of their helplessness in getting Nek Muhammad round to registration of foreigners hiding in the region.

The administrator asked the delegation to exert pressure on Nek, who had been given amnesty along with four other militants under the terms of the Sakhai agreement, so that 'foreigners' could be registered. He warned of a punitive action against the entire tribe under the 1901 Frontier Crimes Regulation if they failed in their task until 10am on Sunday.

A jirga of Ahmadzai Wazirs was earlier held on Saturday which reached the conclusion that implementation of the new agreement regarding registration of foreigners was beyond their powers. The jirga members decided to inform the government in categorical terms about their inability in fulfilling the demands put forward by it.

A delegation of the jirga members later met the agency administrator and told him that they had tried their level best to persuade Nek Muhammad but to no avail.
