KARACHI, May 1: An under trial prisoner died in mysterious circumstances in Landhi Jail and his body was taken to a hospital on Saturday morning for autopsy.

The police said that Asif, 24, was handed over to the Super Market police in Liaquatabad by his father Ashiq Hussain after he was fed up with his son's drug addiction on April 11. The police, after arresting Asif in a drug case on the same day, sent him to Landhi jail subsequently through a court order.

The jail police told doctors at the Civil Hospital that Asif died at around 9.20pm on Friday. He was brought to the CHK at 9am on Saturday. The family also accompanied the police.

The jail police tried to force the medico-legal officers on duty to issue death certificate without performing the autopsy. The doctors refused to issue the death certificate without conducting autopsy, which led to exchange of hot words between the jail police and the MO. The Risala police were informed, who reached the CHK emergency ward. The cause of death was reserved after the post-mortem examination till the receipt of histopathological tests and chemical examination.
