HYDERABAD, Jan 31: Members of the Hyderabad District Council at a meeting held on Saturday expressed dissatisfaction over district government's efforts in resolving the issue of releasing the share of octroi and district tax to rural union councils.

The chief whip of the council, Miran Mohammad Shah, quoted a statement of the DCO in which he said it would take a month to resolve the matter.

Mr Shah observed that the issue had remained unresolved despite it had been pending for the last two and half years.

He said the council had decided to approach the Sindh government in this regard and if the matter was not resolved, the members would continue their protest.

Enough time was taken in points of order raised by members one after the other.

Expressing his displeasure over this sort of attitude, convener Nawab Rashid Ali Khan maintained that the council's agenda was to be disposed of first and added that the resolutions lost their worth when they were delayed.

The issue was again raised by Karim Talpur on a point of order, saying no heed was paid to the members' protest.

The members then walked out of the session and blocked the Fatima Jinnah Road outside the council, demanding the payment of octroi share to union councils.

Majeed Wahidi drew the attention of the council towards the accumulation of sewage in an underpass of a railway track in the area.

Yousuf Qureshi said his area was submerged by water after rains.

Rana Mehmood Ali Khan said sanitation staff of the HDA had threatened not to work during Eid as they had not been paid salaries. He also sought an inquiry into the promotion of junior officers in taluka municipal administrations.

Mir Ghulamullah Talpur alleged that the Tando Mohammad Khan taluka Nazim had floated tenders of Rs6 million to construct roads around his agricultural lands.
