KARACHI, Jan 17: The Jamiat Ulema-i-Pakistan has demanded an immediate end to the on-going army operation in Wana in South Waziristan.
This demand was made at a joint meeting of the central executive committee and Shoora of JUP held at World Islamic Mission in Gulshan-i-Iqbal on Saturday.
The meeting, presided over by the acting JUP president, Prof Shah Faridul Haque, termed the operation a conspiracy for confrontation between people and the army which would be disastrous for cohesion and solidarity of the country.
"The people of Pakistan through their unity would foil this conspiracy," the JUP observed.
The party reviewed the steps being taken for improvement in Pakistan-India ties, and criticized the attempts to solve the Kashmir issue by ignoring the UN resolutions on the issue.
Earlier, the meeting endorsed Prof Shah Faridul Haque as JUP chief until the holding of election of the office in next two months. A committee was also formed, headed by Sahibzada Ateequr Rehman. Other members of the committee are Mufti Jameel Ahmed Naimee, Pir Mian Abdul Khaliq Bherchondi Sharif.
Another committee was also set up to investigate the misunderstandings and other contentious issues between chapters of JUP and Muttahida Majlise Amal in the NWFP. This committee is headed by the party's secretary general Lt Gen (Retd) K.M. Azhar with Pir Ejaz Hashmi, Sahibzada Abul Khair Zubair, Muhammad Owais Qadri and Prof Mohammad Sahib.
The meeting also finalized arrangements for Chehlum of its late president Maulana Shah Ahmed Noorani, who was also the chief of MMA.
Quran Khawani will be held on Sunday between 10 am and 12 noon. A public meeting will also be held at the Amir Khusrau Park which will be attended by leaders of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal.
