GUJRANWALA, May 31: Punjab JUI-S Naib Amir Dr Ghulam Muhammad was arrested and sent to jail on Friday in a five-year old case after the rejection of his bail application by a local court.

Civil Lines police had booked him in 1997 for participating in a public meeting of the Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), but could not arrest him.

A few days ago, police had opened up the case and went to arrest him at his residence, but he got an interim bail from the sessions court. The judge dismissed his bail application when he did not appear before court on the day of hearing. On Friday, he appeared before court and submitted a medical certificate of his illness. Rejecting his plea for the restoration of his bail, the judge sent him to jail.

Meanwhile, leaders of the JUI-S held an emergent meeting and strongly protested the arrest of Dr Ghulam Muhammad.

Allama Mahmood Ahmad Ludhianvi, former deputy mayor Mian Muhammad Arif advocate, Maulana Qari Muhammad Ikram and others said the police were opening up old cases against religious leaders at the behest of government to victimize them.

They demanded that Dr Ghulam Muhammad should be released instantly besides withdrawing the case against him.

TWO MURDERED: A youth on Friday murdered his widow aunt and a cousin over a marriage issue in Peoples Colony and escaped after locking the house from outside.

Police broke open the door and recovered the bodies which were removed to the city morgue.

Ghulam Fatima and FA student Tahira Bibi were present in their house when Jahanzeb alias Mitho of Lahore came there along with his associate. He asked her aunt that he wanted to marry with her daughter, but she rejected his proposal. Falling into a rage, Mitho murdered them with the help of his associate.

Police have registered a case and are investigating.
