KARACHI, May 31: The first meeting of the advisory committee set up under SLGO, 2001, for dealing with the matters between the city district government and the towns in Karachi met here on Friday under the chairmanship of city Nazim Naimatullah Khan.

Nazims of the 18 Towns of Karachi are its members and the DCO Karachi acts as secretary of the committee.

The first meeting of the committee was informed that besides close liaison between the city government and the towns, major development schemes for the city, preparation of policies and similar other issues will come under its consideration.

It was informed that as per rules the committee would meet once in three months. But in order to solve the intricate problems of Karachi the advisory committee would meet every month while its sessions can be called on a motion from a member in case of an emergency.

Concern was expressed that the city roads and streets were being used as bus terminals which was not appropriate morally and legally. It was decided to establish a bus terminus outside the city for the 1500 inter-city buses coming to Karachi and to prepare a uniform policy for the whole city in that regard.

It was decided to write a letter to the Sindh government to apprise it about the financial crisis facing the city’s civic organisations. The Sindh government would be asked to immediately pay its dues to the city government to overcome their fiscal problem.

Nazim Karachi and chairman advisory committee, Naimatullah Khan urged town Nazims to maintain a better relationship with UC Nazims. He said UC Nazims should be taken into confidence in connection with preparation of policies and planning of development schemes for the purpose of providing facilities to citizens.

RADIO CHANNEL: The city government is considering a proposal for establishment of the first educational radio channel in the city. The proposal is expected to materialize in August, sources said.

According to initial estimates, the project of the FM-radio channel, which will exclusively be utilized for educational purpose, will cost around Rs9 million.

It is expected that the city government will allocate funds for the project in its next budget. Besides, a foreign NGO has assured the government to provide fund for this social project.

The city government sources said the proposed site for the radio station was near Hill Park from where programmes will be aired.

The aim of the government to launch the project is to promote education among the masses and strive hard to increase literacy rate to the extent of hundred per cent among children.

The radio channel is expected to attract attention of more than ten million listeners yearly. The station will work for ten hours from 7am to 10am and from 3pm to 10pm daily.

The sources said the city government had decided to hire the services of around eight persons to run the project which include producer, assistant producer, engineer, and four other employees of lower cadre.

The teachers and students of the Mass Communication Department, Karachi University, have voluntarily offered their services.

The programme to be broadcast would include national songs, interviews of brilliant students, science programmes, debates, career planing advice, lectures of professors and programmes for adults education.
