NAIROBI, March 30: A team from the African Cricket Association (ACA) is to arrive here this week to investigate the chaos that has enveloped the governing of the sport in Kenya, local officials said Wednesday.

The four-strong delegation, led by the ACA’s Zimbabwean president Peter Chingoka, is to arrive in Nairobi on Friday to meet the two rival parties involved in a bitter dispute over the running of Kenyan cricket.

The committee was appointed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) at its board meeting in New Dehli earlier this month to seek a resolution to the impasse and will be assisted by ICC vice-president Percy Sonn.

Officials from the disbanded Kenya Cricket Association (KCA) who are fighting their January dismissal by sports minister Ochilo Ayacko for alleged mismanagement welcomed the intervention.

But the government-backed replacement board known as Cricket Kenya has remained silent on the visit.

“We have been told that we will meet the delegation twice on Saturday,” KCA chairman Sharad Ghai said. “We are ready to meet them and put our point across. We don’t have many things to discuss with them.”

The ACA team is expected to forward its findings to the ICC executive which may recommend that Kenya be stripped of their One-day International status at its annual general meeting in June.

Kenya is the only ODI member of the ICC, having being granted the status in 1997.

Other members of the ACA delegation include the association’s chief executive officer Kassim Sulaiman and Ray Mali, president of the United Cricket Board of South Africa.—AFP
