KARACHI, March 21: Eminent storywriter Saadat Hasan Manto was remembered at his 50th death anniversary on Saturday at the Arts Council.

The function was hosted by the weekly Mazdoor Jeddojuhd Lahore, represented by one of its member Nasir Mansoor. Dr Fayaz Vaid compered the proceedings and Dr Mohammad Ali Siddiqui, Dr Anwer Sajjad, Kamal Ahmad Rizvi, Dr Asif Farrukhi and Ahmad Mubarak addressed on the occasion. The audience coming from middle class professionals to working people in large numbers attended the function with the claim that Manto belonged to them. Against the norms, all those sitting on the stage were taken as members of the presidium.

The first to read his paper on the great writer Manto, whose stories were translated into 28 European languages and known the world over, was Ahmad Mubarak. Describing Manto?s deep sympathy with common people especially the oppressed women, Ahmad broke into tears recalling the fate of Mukhtaran Mai and Dr Shazia Khalid ? both the victims of rape.

Dr Asif Farrukhi in his paper remembered Manto as a writer who believed in experience and not in any ideology. Dr Siddiqui traced the great storywriter?s faith in Marxism. He said that his claim was supported by the presence of so many workers and middle class people in the audience.

Dr Anwer Sajjad, who had spent five to six years in close company of Manto, admired the great writer for his craft and use of crisp language.

Anjum Ayaz, an artist and a writer, spoke briefly recalling his experience while presenting Manto on the stage. It was so inspiring to find so many people taking interest in the presentation and participation in Manto plays, he said.

Haroon Saeed presented Manto?s short story ?Dhuaan? (the smoke) in dramatic nuances.

The last to speak was Kamal Ahmad Rizvi, a highly admired actor at the stage and in the electronic media. He gave a dramatic presentation of Manto?s story ?Baadshahat ka khatema? and Kamal?s first stage play. Kamal had some very interesting things to narrate about Manto received by the audience with rapt attention. In the end, Nasir Mansoor thanked the guests and briefly introduce his weekly, floated 25 years ago and was serving the cause of the workers. ? HA
