Champions head for early exit

KARACHI, Feb 28: Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL), the reigning champions, were heading for a certain defeat after PIA forced them to follow-on in the Patron's Trophy Pool 'A' match at the UBL Sports Complex on Monday.

Batting a second time, ZTBL were in deep trouble at 56 for three at the close of play on the second day and still need 105 to make PIA bat again. Having reaching a respectable 307 after resuming at 259 for six on a pitch favouring spinners, PIA's pace-cum-spin attack then prised out ZTBL for 146 in the first innings.

Apart from Shahid Yousuf (35, six fours) and the left-handed Rehan Rafiq (33 not out, four fours), no other batsman in the ZTBL innings managed to pass 20. Left-arm pace man Najaf Shah got rid of both openers and then came back to dismiss tail-ender Nadeem Sikander.

Imran Tahir, the leg-spinner, and off-spinner Tahir Khan chipped in with two wickets each while Shahid Yousuf and ZTBL captain Rao Iftikhar were both run out. Imran struck twice more when he clean bowled Atif Ashraf and Hammad Tariq after the follow-on was enforced upon the hapless ZTBL team by PIA skipper Moin Khan. Earlier, Mansoor Amjad took one further wicket to finish with five for 112 in 37 overs of leg-spin bowling.
