KARACHI, Feb 2: An amount of Rs1,057 million has so far been spent on various development works at UC level, a spokesman for the city government said on Tuesday , adding that the work included construction of a total of 950 kilometres of roads, CC-flooring of streets, water and sewerage schemes, installation of street lights and rehabilitation of parks.

He said the very objective of development through the funds allocated to UC nazims and councillors was to help elected representatives solve the problems being faced by people as per the requirements of the concerned areas.

He said the Women Library Complex located near Nipa Chowrangi, was first of its kind and was being built with the funds provided to the women councillors belonging to the Al-Khidmat Group.

The spokesman said that during the last thee years, the City Council had allocated Rs3.17 billion development fund to UCs. He said that City Nazim Niamatullah Khan desired that the fruits of local government system reached at gross-roots level.

Commenting on press reports about an inquiry by the chief minister's inspection team into Rs5 billion funds for union councillors, he said the move would have been prompted by some mis understanding or it could be part of the propaganda against the city government. -APP
