Lions roar past Panthers

LAHORE, Jan 7: A match-winning unbroken seventh wicket stand of 154-run between Jahangir Mirza and Khurram Chauhan guided Lahore Lions (LL) to a four-wicket victory against Peshawar Panthers in One-day Cup Qadhafi Stadium on Friday.

Jahangir, hit a sparkling 86 while Khurram was equally brilliant with 65 as their unbroken partnership helped Lions recover from 70-6 to overhaul the target, scoring 224 with two overs to spare from allotted 45 overs.

Jahangir cracked seven fours and three sixes off 99 balls. Khurram, who lofted seamer Waqar Ahmed to long-on for a boundary for the winning runs, in all smashed five boundaries and one six while facing 73 balls.

Lions chasing a getable target, had lost first three wickets quickly at the total of five. Two more wickets with the addition of 20 runs had reduced LL to 25. Earlier Panthers, put in to bat first by Lionss skipper Humayun Farhat managed 222 for seven in the allotted 45 overs.

Playing without two key players Wajahatullah Wasti and Fazle Akbar, Peshawar were only served well by opener Riffat Ullah (57, four fours. Leg spinner Imran Tahir did the most damage taking four wickets for 26.

Had Waqar Ahmed (29 not out, three sixes, one four, 20 balls) not plundered 26 runs in the last over of the innings sent down by leg-spinner Kashif Siddique, Peshawar would not have reached at a total of 222. Waqar with his captain Arshad Khan (27 not out, two fours, 35 balls) collected 51 runs in unbroken eight wicket partnership.
